Overwhelm is my Choice

We are working on the last stages of four new videos. Follow ups to ADD & Loving It?! Count ‘em, Four!

On Saturday, June 9, Patrick and I will be on the air on the Baltimore PBS station, MPT, for the  world premiere of ADD & Mastering It!

Patrick and I explore 36 tools, tips and strategies for dealing with adult ADHD. and ADD. Actually, for ADDers of all ages. For viewers who call and make a pledge they’ll also receive 3 more full-length videos that we have just finished which are the beginning of a series called The Comprehensive Guide to ADHD: What is ADHD?; Embracing The Diagnosis!; and Living With ADHD.

The videos are a culmination of over a year of work and dozens of interviews. ADD & Mastering It!will debut on the rest of the PBS network starting August 1st. [Check with your local PBS station to make sure they’ll be running it.] And those first three videos of The Comprehensive Guide to ADHDwill be available during those broadcasts.

You want more? I’ve got more! On top of that we’re adding a whole new layer to the TotallyADD website which involves all kinds of new writing, shooting, connecting with new partners, and the thousand decisions about everything from the layout to the pictures to… Stuff I’ve never even thought of before. I now know enough about the internet to debate Al Gore!

Oh, and don’t worry, the website isn’t changing, we’re just fixing some existing issues and adding more resources. Because one of the constant messages we’ve received since the moment we launched TotallyADD.com is for more advanced materials, more in-depth information and online events, seminars and courses. So we’ve been working on that as well.

You want more? I’ve got more! [This is turning into an ad for the Slap Chop!] In March the good people who have organized ADHD Awareness Week asked if we would help to organize and run a contest so that ADDers around the world could share their stories and take part in a kind of virtual flash mob. I said yes. (Ava was in the other room.)  So we are adding a whole new layer to the website where you will be able to submit your own videos as part of a contest, or to be part of a huge collage, or simply to tell your story and make a difference for others.

You want more? I’ve got more! Much more! Tooooo much.

So I’m back in overwhelm. And I’m wondering now if I’m actually an addict. I keep trying to simplify my life and it never happens.

Why? I’ve been thinking about that. After years of telling myself that this is just how life is. It’s not how life is. It’s how my life is. Or has been. And in a lot of ways it’s great. And in some ways not so great. Or, what’s the word… Inefficient? Needlessly frustrating? Relentless to the point of monotony perhaps.

Rather than overwhelm you with my overwhelm I’ll leave it for now. Consider where you have overwhelm in your life. Ask what I asked, “What is the payoff for this? What do I get out of it?” It may not be pretty.

Next week I’ll share what I’ve discovered about the how and why of my overwhelm that may sound awfully familiar to you.

Best,

Rick

What time will it be broadcast? Any studio audience? As a local, I’d be delighted to say hello. (I’ll help out with a flash mob, too, if you need help…)

Here’s a link to when it’ll be broadcast on MPT: http://www.mpt.org/schedule/detail/20243

    Ha ha! I don’t think there’s a live audience.
But yeah, you could make a difference. Be on camera, taking calls!
Call the station and say you’d like to help volunteer and answer phones. PBS is always eager to have volunteers. They teach you how to process a call and it’s great fun. I’ve done it often for charity telethons, educational networks, and so on.
The trick is to avoid getting into a fascinating discussion with the folks who call in, “Your son has it too? So does mine! And my husband. When he found out he was…”
I think we tape go live to air at 3:00 in the afternoon. (Oh great, the time of day when I’m most scattered! That should create some fun.)
And then they’ll rerun it at other times. So for those who miss it, it will be running more than once.

Yeah, Ava said we’re on at 3:00. Patrick and I are getting revved.
The people at Maryland Public Television are awesome. They took a big risk in broadcasting “ADD & Loving It?! So they deserve credit for making a huge difference in millions of lives, because without that first broadcast, we wouldn’t have ended up on 90 PBS affiliates.

Ah. Then those of us in Baltimore will get to see the premiere!

This is so awesome!! Hi Rick, my mom used to work with you as a host at the Ontario Science centre, and we both love your work. I wish i could get PBS up here, but can’t. Will the broadcast be available for purchase after the August 1st release date? Would you be able to purchase this through the website? I will be running an employment skills workshop for people with learning disabilities and ADHD, so i feel as though I could use the videos to assist with that. I would be interested in new resources and tools as they come out, is there a way to be added to an email list with updates?
    Thank you!!

Thanks for the the email about the new stuff. Will it be available here as well as through the PBS stations?. I already give my local one (KVIE) some money from time to time, but for all those videos they’ll want a huge chunk of money. I’m disabled and have a very limited budget. So it would work out best for me to get them maybe one at a time.
You will sell more video’s overall if you offer them separately, the majority of people who are severely impaired by ADHD just don’t make the big bucks, I bet you knew that. Yer no dummy. Anyways, that’s just what I heard on the news.
I think maybe they said you’re a dummy? hmmm, I forget… dang dyslexia!!. I bet sometimes like me you’re both huh? hehe.
But then you say brilliant stuff out of the blue, like it’s magic, huh?
    Will wonders ever cease?`
    Don’t answer.
